Methodology

By nature, ranking roasters involves some subjectivity. There is no perfect ranking, and there’s no perfect way to measure how good one roaster is compared to another.

Each methodology for selecting roasters has tradeoffs, but we worked hard to keep the process as fair and objective as possible. We do not claim to have the perfect methodology or the perfect list. However we think this list is of good quality, and we have plans for further improvements in the coming years.

Panel Selection

We aimed for a large panel of specialty coffee experts representing many regions across the world. The panel included experts from various areas, including roasters, producers, multi-roaster cafe owners, product entrepreneurs, and coffee competition winners.

Geographic Distribution

We tried to get a good representation of the specialty coffee market worldwide. We selected the number of panelists from each region based on data about specialty coffee market size by region.

The Process

We asked each panel member to rank their top 25 roasters. Using a points system, we assigned 25 points for a 1st place vote, 24 points for a 2nd place vote, and so on. The total points were then added together to determine the rankings. This method is similar to many top polls worldwide.

Over 300 roasters received votes, and the margins towards the back of the list were thin. The top roasters consistently received high rankings from multiple panel members, reflecting the consensus of opinion to their quality.

Looking Forward

We hope this list sparks positive discussions, and we’d love to hear about your favorite roasters and any we might have missed. Once again, we want to give congratulations to all of the roasters and a huge thank you to the panel members. Stay tuned, we have big plans and ideas for next year. We hope this continues to grow and get better every year.
